Trump throws in towel on decency

Woodside: President Trump tweeted Thursday that we cant keep helping Puerto Rico. We have spent $4.2 trillion dollars on Afghanistan. We do not have a lot to show. There is something wrong with abandoning Americans. This guy doesnt get it. Richard Tobiassen
Ozone Park: I am sure Trump wishes he could do to Puerto Rico what he did for the Atlantic City casinos when things got tough. Just close them up and let them rot. He must be looking at ways to get us out of Puerto Rico so we dont look like a Third World country to the rest of the world. Ray Hackinson
Belle Harbor: One of the many problems that Hurricane Maria has brought to the forefront is the damage done by NAFTA. Two years ago, during Tropical Storm Joaquin, the cargo ship SS El Faro sunk on the way to Puerto Rico with all hands on board lost. The reason for the rush? The boat was loaded with frozen chicken en route to Puerto Rico that needed to arrive in time to avoid missing the expiration date. Shipping chickens from Mexico proved to be cheaper due to NAFTA but after Maria, it proves the drawbacks of such a policy. Puerto Rico has no farm based economy for self-sustenance to fall back on. So when I read that Maria has destroyed the Puerto Rican farming economy, I had to laugh; NAFTA did that years ago. So please excuse the pun, but the chickens have come home to roost. Shaun Reen

Gaias revenge

Flushing: As raging wildfires engulf a large portion of Northern California, one must ponder the events of the past few months. It has been a crazy and chaotic time filled with natural disasters that have been striking our beleaguered nation with astounding regularity. Three hurricanes have had devastating effects on large parts of the South and U.S. territories in the Caribbean. Hellacious wildfires have scorched earth in the North and West, cremating everything in their path. Add to that the deadly earthquakes to neighbors across our southern borders, and you must begin to question if our Earth, a living organism, is trying to tell us something. Perhaps Mother Nature is trying to send a message that the recent assault on every environmental act enacted in the last decade must be stopped. Liz Nacinovich

Chopped liver?

Brooklyn: The Boy Scouts of America will allow girls to join. I see this as a slap in the face to the Girl Scouts. Why do some people view the Girl Scouts as a group offering less opportunity? It has wonderful programs. And they have had far fewer scandals. I am a proud Girl Scout alum. Ellen Levitt

Its not about Trump

Kew Gardens: To Voicer Harvey Beyer: The truth is NFL players started taking a knee in protest of race, inequality and in solidarity in 2016. So despite your claim, yes, they did pull this when Barack Obama was President. And you have absolutely no way of knowing if they would be doing it if Hillary Clinton were President. As to whether they all hate Trump, who knows. But if you think that is the message they are trying to send, you need to pay more attention to what is happening in the world and not just spout incorrect generalizations. Anne Cox

Biting the hand that helps

Olympia, Wash.: The reason these NFL protests are so inappropriate is that while our black citizens have legitimate concerns with out-of-control police departments in Ferguson, Baltimore, St. Louis and other cites, it is the federal government (represented by the flag and anthem they hold in such disregard) that steps in to address these injustices. Their fight is not with the U.S., and they are alienating their natural allies. William R. Ward

Its the system, stupid

Cambria Heights: Apparently Voicer Harvey Beyer conveniently forgot the protests by I Cant Breathe-T-shirt-wearing professional athletes during the Obama administration. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated during a Democratic administration. Black Lives Matter came into existence during the Obama administration. Trump is just another fake patriot trying to cover up his bigotry and our societys institutional and judicial racism in the American flag. It is people like Mr. Beyer who refuse to see that this problem is not going away and doesnt get discussed until high-profile people in major American institutions say: Enough! Calvin Hill

It is happening

Staten Island: This President is fast and loose with his recent insane statements that theres a calm before the storm. What does this tell the world? What does this tell our enemies? He has the exclusive authority to order a nuclear attack and cannot be vetoed. He is putting us all in danger. The 25th Amendment calls for the vice president to take over should a majority of the Presidents cabinet find him unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. A two-thirds majority of Congress would be needed to confirm such a decision. For the sake of humanity, can his Cabinet and Congress please do something before its too late? Michele Corelli

Citizen Trump

Flushing: I was wondering if anyone has stopped to think about how screwed this country will be once this loose cannon of a President gets either impeached or just (God forbid) serves out his term of office. This moron has been advised of this countrys deepest security secrets, among others. Once he is again a private citizen, he will no doubt, resume his business relationships with Vladimir Putin-friendly oligarchs, if not with Putin himself. Since no one here will lend him money or do business with him because of his bad business track record, he will be driven right into their hands. God help us then. Robert Jong

Power in a union

Flushing: Voicer Laurel Turnbull doesnt understand that we are the United States because we are a federation of 50 states. The Electoral College exists so that the citizens in less heavily populated states dont always automatically have their votes thrown in the trash. That is why a successful presidential campaign should always involve reaching out to the whole country and not just the big cities on the coasts. Ignorant New Yorkers often refer to the rest of the states as flyover country but in our federal republic, the citizens of these states have a voice too, and there should be a balance between the urban and rural interests. Valeria Kondratiev

Blame Democrats

Staten Island: To Voicer Laurel Turnbull: Putting all the blame for this past election on the Electoral College is wrong. Every bit of the blame lies at the door of the Democratic Party. All they had to do was to find a living, breathing human being with at least a shred of dignity and they would have beaten the Dumpster hands down. Instead, they found the only person on this entire planet that had fewer qualifications than the current idiot. Victor R. Stanwick

Dont be cross

Port Washington, L.I.: On Wednesday, the Crossword II puzzle was abysmal; the grid was wrong. I thought I was losing my mind and couldnt figure out what the problem was. I should add that I recently had surgery and dont sleep through the night and I often do the second crossword at 2 or 3 in the morning. I was able to deduce that the mistake was on the part of the Daily News puzzle editor and not myself. In 50 years of reading your paper and doing your puzzles, I dont remember this ever happening in the past. Thanks for the brain check, I found it amusing. Let us not make a habit of this, however. Rollin B. Darling

Hypocrisy, thy name is Al

Whitestone: Al Sharpton is the poster child for everything he claims to reject (Reject violence, transcend cynicism, Op-Ed, Oct. 12). He stirs the pot at every opportunity. Martin Luther King Jr. is rolling over in his grave. Go away, Al! Get a real job and pay your taxes! Antonia Dipreta

Foul ball

Manhattan: To Voicer Leo Barta: I could not possibly care less what the Yankees do; jealousy has nothing to do with it. I am just sick of hearing schoolyard-bullying, self-important, obnoxious Yankee fans like you throwing shade on my Mets and their fans. We all want our team to be the top dog, but its a game, not the cure for cancer. Get a grip. Believe it or not, a great injustice is not done and the world does not come to an end when the Yankees lose. We Met fans are never going to roll over for you or anyone whether we win or lose, and we certainly dont need or ask for anyones recognition or approval. Were classy like that. You stay in the Bronx and well stay in Flushing and well all be better off. Lynne Henderson
