A 90-year-old Virginia woman died after the familys recently adopted 1-year-old pit bull attacked her in her bedroom.
Police responded to the house in Pine Meadows around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and immediately rushed the woman to the hospital. She underwent surgery including an arm amputation but died from her injuries early Thursday morning, WNCN reported.
The victims daughter, identified only as Linda, told the news station they adopted the pit bull, who they named Blue, mere hours before the attack at Forever Home Rehabilitation center after seeing a $20 Craigslist ad for the pup.
Linda said the attack went on for roughly five minutes, despite her repeated efforts to stop the 50-pound dog. She said she was outside playing with Blue when she heard her mother yelling for help after falling in her bedroom.
Once inside, the pit bull charged ahead and began biting the 91-year-old woman as she lay on the ground.
He just started biting her, she said, biting her and shaking his head.
Linda said she tried hitting the dog with a hammer, but to no avail. She told the news station the attack finally ended when she managed to push her mothers walker onto the canine.
Forever Home Rehabilitation center in a statement said they were devastated for the family and described Blue as a favorite amongst all staff members and volunteers.
We dont not know what events transpired in the moments before this tragedy occurred with Blues owners mother, and none of us could have ever predicted this horrible event, the centers statement reads.
Linda said the attack was completely unprovoked, WNCN reported.
Blue is now in quarantine at the Virginia Beach Animal Care and will spend 10 days there until the center rules on how to handle the pit bull.
