“Journalists should know this by now: Trump is gonna Trump.” That’s the Times media columnist Jim Rutenberg in a Jan. 12 Mediator article. What that means, says Mr. Rutenberg is that President Trump is going to “throw pitches that are curve balls,” is “completely unpredictable,” and likes to use optics against the media. So, says Mr. Rutenberg, “Everyone‘s gotta be on guard.”
Says the White House correspondent Peter Baker: “We’ve already seen that this is a new president who is planning to throw out the rule book, so as reporters, we shouldn’t assume everything is going to be business as usual, because it’s clearly not going to be.”
In this podcast, Mr. Rutenberg and Mr. Baker (who has covered Presidents Obama, Clinton and George W. Bush, and was, until recently, The Times’s Jerusalem bureau chief) talk about what’s ahead and how reporters are gearing up to cover the new administration.
