Happy Tuesday, everyone. Lets open up some old wounds.
This year marks 20 years of Titanic, or 20 years of the most frustrating endings in movie history. For those who might need a reminder spoiler alert Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) dies at the end of the film after he valiantly sacrifices his space on a scrap of old timber so that his love Rose (Kate Winslet) can be saved from a frigid death adrift in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Many have argued vehemently ourselves included that Jack could have fit on that damned door. (Famously, Mythbusters not only soundly disproved the idea that the door would have sunk with two bodies on it, but using the same size scrap of wood managed to keep two fully grown men completely high and dry for hours and hours to which director James Cameron replied, The script says Jack dies. He has to die.)
Renowned scientist Neil DeGrasse Tyson has waded into the debate, offering his own scientific explanation. The problem with Titanics ending isnt the size or buoyancy of the door, nor the combined weight of Jack and Rose.
Its Jacks behavior when it comes to getting up on that wood. Whether or not he couldve been successful, I wouldve tried more than once, DeGrasse Tyson told HuffPost. You try once. Oh, this is not gonna work. I will just freeze to death in the water. No, excuse me. No!
For DeGrasse Tyson, the problem lies in the fact that Jacks behavior does not correlate at all with normal survival instincts, which kick in when your life is under threat. An average person in that situation would have tried more than once to get themselves onto the wood, or would have searched more intentionally for an alternative, rather than giving up straight away.
The survival instinct is way stronger than that in everybody, especially in that character, DeGrasse Tyson added. Hes a survivor, right? He gets through. He gets by.
What do you think? Should Jack have tried harder to get on that door? Do you think his lack of survival instincts is a significant flaw with the movie? Are you ready to fight James Cameron on this until the end of time? Yeah. Us too.
