A neighbor who was likely the last person to see two young children alive before they were allegedly butchered by their nanny in their Manhattan apartment lashed out at the caretaker for making an insanity plea.

Charlotte Friedman saw 2-year-old Leo Krim and his 6-year-old sister Lulu with their nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, on the ride up in the elevator of their Upper West Side building on Oct. 25, 2012.

A short time later, Friedman was on the elevator going down on her way to run an errand when she heard the anguished cries of the childrens mother, Marina Krim, from the second-floor mezzanine, according to Friedmans testimony Monday at Ortegas trial in Manhattan Supreme Court.

A lawyer for Ortega, 55, who is accused of fatally stabbing the children and leaving them to die in a bathtub, wanted Friedman to help establish a timeline for jurors.

But Friedman said she did not remember, and resented being called to the stand on Ortegas behalf.

Im sorry, said Friedman, who has lived in the W. 75th St. building for nearly 40 years. Im angry because this is not a case of mental illness.

As for the timeline, an agitated Friedman said she could not recall.

I dont know. It was five years ago. I dont know, Friedman fumed. Speak to the detectives. They have notes. I dont.

What Friedman said she did remember was the happy looks she got from the kids.

Lulu was all smiles, and I said to her, Lulu, you look so beautiful. Where are you going or where are you coming from? Friedman recalled. She said, Dance.

She was radiant and she was smiling, Friedman added. She was just a child full of life, and darling.

She also said a quick farewell to Lulus kid brother, who briefly stirred awake from his slumber in his stroller.

Friedman said bye, bye to the kids and Leo opened one eye, kicked one foot and went back to sleep.

It was a short time later that she made the trip back to the lobby.

Somewhere down like by the fourth floor perhaps, Im hearing screaming like I have never heard in my life. It was awful and it was scary, she said.

It was like primal screaming.

Ortega faces life in prison if convicted. If she is found not guilty by reason of insanity, she could spend the rest of her life in a psychiatric facility.
