As the Jets enjoy this surprising 2017 season, one glaring weakness has persisted: They are a bad team away from MetLife Stadium. And one of their most unique road tests comes Sunday against the Broncos at Mile High Stadium.
Denver is in a full-fledged tailspin this season under first-year head coach Vance Joseph. The team is 3-9 and has lost eight straight games heading into the matchup with the Jets. But the elevation of the Broncos home stadium 5,280 feet always presents a challenge to visiting teams, and the Jets are planning accordingly.
You do the best you can, Todd Bowles said in Florham Park on Wednesday. We get in a day early (Friday), and (well) try to see who has breathing problems and who doesnt, and we go that way. We just play the ball game not try to make too much of it.
The Jets lone road victory of the season came in Week 5 at the Browns, who have yet to win a game this season.
The rest of the Jets road games have ranged from disappointing to disastrous. They were crushed by the Raiders in Oakland in Week 2. They blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead to the Dolphins in Week 7. They played their worst game of the season in a crucial Week 10 contest at the slumping Bucs.
In total, the Jets are 1-4 on the road this season. Bowles has gone 4-9 on the road in his past two seasons, and two of those wins came at the Browns, whove won just once since Christmas 2015.
On the road, I think we just have to be more consistent, Josh McCown said. We were on the road in Miami and played a good game, but we didnt finish. We never really got started in Tampa. Just things like that where its kind of the same thing that we talked about, whether it is home or away, its all four quarters that we have to be more consistent.
Bowles said cornerback Rashard Robinson for whom the Jets traded a fourth-round pick at the trade deadline in October is now even on the depth chart with No. 3 corner Darryl Roberts, who plays outside in the Jets nickel package.
Robinson played 18 of 46 defensive snaps (39%) in Sundays win over the Chiefs. Roberts played 14. Robinson was beat by Kansas City speedster Tyreek Hill on a 79-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
Obviously he gave up the deep ball, Bowles said. But other than that, he didnt get any action.
Running back Matt Forte (knee), safety Terrence Brooks (not injury related) and linebacker Bruce Carter (groin) did not practice Wednesday.
Cornerback Juston Burris (concussion) and right guard Brian Winters (abdomen, ankle) were limited.
