ORLANDO Mike Maccagnan cast doubt on Teddy Bridgewaters readiness for the start of Jets offseason workouts a few days after the quarterback was cryptic about the health of his surgically repaired knee.
That injury may take some time to fully recover from, Maccagnan said at the NFL Annual Meeting on Monday. Any player you sign in free agency, theres a bit of a reward-risk aspect to it. But we thought in particularly with him, we can help him regain his previous form that he showed earlier in his career where he was a very good young quarterback.
Everything has led us to believe that he not only does he have a chance to do that, Maccagnan continued, But when you really get to know (him) from a character, work-ethic standpoint, hes a guy that wed like to take the bet on and see what he can do.
Bridgewater, who signed a one-year deal that effectively guarantees him nothing other than $1 million ($500K signing bonus and $500K workout bonus) and a training camp/preseason audition, told reporters last week that he was not comfortable about the status of his knee.

Well see how he progresses, Maccagnan said. Theres things were doing with him to set him up for success. If all things go well, you guys will have a chance to see him out there to throw this spring.
Bridgewater has taken only two snaps in a game since suffering a grievous knee injury (ACL tear and dislocation) in the summer of 2016. His pedigree (17-12 as a starter) and age (25) make him an intriguing option, but how will he fit in for a team with a veteran (Josh McCown) and incoming rookie (No. 3 pick)?
Maccagnan, who desperately needs an answer to the franchises quarterback problem, is willing to throw as many darts on the signal caller board as possible to see if he hit the bulls-eye. So, taking a shot on Bridgewater was worth it in his eyes.
If he can regain his previous form its an extra bonanza for us, Maccagnan said. Wed be very happy. If he can regain his previous form, itll be a very good problem to have with having a lot good young talented quarterbacks on the roster.

Bridgewaters health will have a direct impact on Christian Hackenbergs future with the team. If Bridgewater is healthy and looks reasonably well this spring/summer, there obviously wont be room for Hackenberg.
Well have a plan in place, Maccagnan said about carrying four quarterbacks into training camp. Weve already talked about it internally. Well see how things come along. Well see how Teddy comes along. Well figure out ways to make sure everybody gets the reps they need. Quarterbacks are bit of a commodity in this business, so well see how that all unfolds.
I know in particular with Christian, he spent a lot of time this offseason working, Maccagnan later added. So, Im kind of excited to see him come back. But again, depending on how Teddy comes along and what happens in the draft, I wouldnt necessarily rule anything in or anything out at this point in time.
